Questions That Reveal Signs of Autism: Understanding the M-CHAT Test

The M-CHAT-R/F™ (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow-Up) is a valuable tool for early identification of potential signs of autism in young children. Designed for toddlers between 16 and 30 months old, it helps parents and caregivers recognize early indicators that may warrant further evaluation.

What is the M-CHAT Test?

The M-CHAT is a scientifically validated screening tool consisting of 20 questions about a child’s behavior and development. It’s not a diagnostic test, but rather a first step in identifying children who might benefit from a comprehensive autism assessment.

Why Early Screening Matters

Early identification of autism is crucial because it opens the door to early intervention services. Research consistently shows that early intervention significantly improves long-term outcomes for children with autism, helping them develop essential skills and reach their full potential.

Key Questions on the M-CHAT

The M-CHAT covers a range of behaviors relevant to early autism signs. Some of the core questions include:

  • Joint Attention: Does your child look at things you point to across the room? Does your child show you things by bringing them to you or pointing at them?
  • Social Interaction: Is your child interested in other children? Does your child smile at you when you smile at them?
  • Communication: Does your child imitate you? (For example, if you make a face, will your child imitate it?) Does your child use their index finger to point, to ask for something?
  • Play: Does your child play pretend or make-believe? (For example, pretend to talk on a phone or feed a doll)
  • Repetitive Behaviors: Does your child have unusual finger movements near their eyes? Does your child get upset by minor changes?

Interpreting the M-CHAT Results

The M-CHAT scoring system categorizes results into low, medium, and high risk.

  • Low Risk: A low-risk result suggests that the child’s behavior is typical for their age, and no further action is needed.
  • Medium Risk: A medium-risk result indicates that some behaviors warrant further investigation. A follow-up interview (M-CHAT-R/F) is typically conducted to clarify responses and assess the child’s development more thoroughly.
  • High Risk: A high-risk result indicates a strong likelihood that the child may have autism and should be referred for a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.

Important Note: Only a qualified professional can diagnose autism. The M-CHAT is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument.

"Chicago ABA Therapy is a boon for special needs kids and parents. They take a play-based, personalized approach and meet the kids where they are. They also go above and beyond - our ABA therapist took time to make sure we as parents understood every aspect of our child's experience, understood how to read his progress reports and generally made us feel a part of his therapy. My child loved all his therapists. Highly recommend the team!"

"We were so happy with our experience with Chicago ABA. We began working with them when our son was almost 4, a few months after his autism diagnosis. It was such an amazing team to work with - everyone was professional, responsive, flexible, and worked so hard for our son to meet his goals, which he did beautifully. We worked together for almost 2 years before he left for kindergarten, and in that time period he met almost all of his goals. We went through several bumps in the road with behavioral difficulties, and the Chicago ABA team did an amazing job helping us problem solve, try new strategies and think of ways to translate those strategies at home. We couldn't recommend them more highly - anyone who works with Chicago ABA will be lucky to have the experience!"
